In a former life I used to be an archaeologist. My research focus used to be about how humans can infer significant actions, performances if you will, from the traces that are left in the material world. This was related to how one of the ways we perceive art arose out of human cognitive evolution.
At the time I wasn’t a very good photographer. I did my best to have a stab at finding such traces in the urban environment but to be honest, I failed.
What I really wanted to find were traces of very mundane actions, repeated over a span of time, that were ‘curated’ in the material culture of the city. The best example I can think of is the ancient step that has been worn away by years of people stepping up in the middle.
In a way this is almost the archaeology of street photography. The decisive moment curated in stone or concrete.
I kinda fancy re-starting this project but with the resources of my Tumblr friends. Anyone game? I can expand at length about the rationale of this project if anyone is interested in this.
